I made a mistake but managed to get back on my bike. I still have the yellow jersey and tomorrow will certainly be a tough stage but I felt good in the last long climb.
Today we rode a bit defensively but there is no doubt tomorrow will be all out. Max Schachmann Bora-Hansgrohe remains overall leader.
Max Schachmann Bora-Hansgrohe remains leader on G. To get three guys in the top 15 today is a really good result.
He paced himself well on the climb, thought about his race and really went full gas on the run in to the finish.
He was absolutely flying to take the victory. Max Schachmann Bora-Hansgrohe retained the overall race lead. NOS, geo-restricted.
The first half was pretty relaxed, everything was under control and Juraj did a particularly good job there. Just before the final, it became very hectic, with the field splitting, and at the end of all of this, Peter finished second in the sprint.
Although it was easier at the beginning, there was a lot of tension and nerves in the final kilometres. Most of the sprinters found themselves without many teammates in the final stretch, so it was more of an individual battle.
Unfortunately, I was at the front quite early and I wasn't able to keep the pace to the finish line but I took a strong second place.
Max was also well protected and finished in the leading group, keeping the yellow jersey. However, the guys did a great job again today.
Over the final 40km there were crosswinds, and they performed particularly well there. We were always up at the front with Max, Pascal and Peter.
In such a hard race, these things can happen though. The strongest man wins on the day, and today that was Nizzolo.
In the overall standings, we were also able to make another step further, with Max extending his lead. I didn't expect the rain, so it was really cold and difficult in the beginning and then got hot with all the clothing.
I'd like to thank the guys that supported me well and brought me to the front several times. In the crosswinds, my legs opened up again and I was riding really well, and was able to make it up to the front.
Peter then put in a huge effort to split the field, and in the end, I was up there with Felix, Pascal, and Peter. We did a very good job today and I extended my lead in the yellow jersey but we certainly will not take anything for granted because I saw that other competitors were also strong today.
We rode at the front of the field the whole day, with Patrick Konrad and Felix Grossschartner also making it into the man leading group.
From this group, Alaphilippe and Benoot then launched an attack and we had to invest everything in chasing this down, because we knew that the final 15km featured a tail crosswind.
Felix did a fantastic job of chasing down the duo and bringing them back, and even took 9th place in the end. As planned, Max attacked on the top of the cobbled climb with 5km to go, and in the end was able to take a very impressive win.
I'm very happy to bring home this victory for BORA-hansgrohe. I had a good start to the season, I missed a stage in Algarve by a few centimetres, so it's nice to win here.
Being the overall leader is a great feeling and a responsibility but we'll certainly do our best, we have a very good team here. We have two leaders, Julian and Sam, who will both find stages that suit them and will be supported by a strong team comprising riders who have shown a good form recently and can control the race, but at the same time, seize the opportunity if it arises.
The main goal is to win stages, but we could take an aim also at the general classification, depending on how things will go day by day.
